It’s A Twin, Now It’s A King, and It Has Storage, Oh My!
I built two of these beds before I decided to make woodworking more than just a hobby. It was before I owned a Kreg Jr. or had access to a table saw or other tools that may have made this build go quicker, but rest assured that’s okay it still came out amazing. The good news is you can build this too with just a circular saw (and of course a power drill).
Inspired by another bed we purchased at IKEA, this storage bed is nod to the first piece of furniture I made almost fiften years ago. Literally, we need several beds like that one in our home to accomodate our guests. When friends and family come into town, I prefer that they don’t say at hotel. This all in one solution was the answer. It starts out as a twin bed constructed of three-quarter inch PureBond plywood purchased at Home Depot. I used PureBond since its layers are adhered with adhesive that does not include formaldehyde.
The bed has storageĀ for toys, one side for toys that are typically played with every day and on the other side, I hid toys that should not be played with everyday.
The slats are pre-cut bed slats that measure at 39″, each one was screwed to the 2″ x4″ bed frame. In order to convert this twin to a king, another set of slats and a 2 x 4 can be added to the extension, unfortunately, I didn’t snap any photos of this step. As far as where to store the extra matress while the bed is in twin mode…I used foam matresses which are about six inches thick and if two are stacked on top on one another, it isn’t too high.
